Reuters first to report U.S. to downgrade Malaysia to worst tier in trafficking report

Jul 1, 2021

Reuters was first to report that the U.S. State Department would downgrade Malaysia to the worst ranking in its closely watched annual report on human trafficking. The downgrade comes after a string of complaints by rights groups and U.S. authorities over the alleged exploitation of migrant workers in plantations and factories. The Southeast Asian nation has close to 2 million foreign workers, and rights groups say there are millions more undocumented.
